Job Description Position Highlights Department: Nursing Radiation Therapy Hours: 40.00 per week Shift: Shift 1 Position Summary The Registered Nurse in the Radiation Oncology department is accountable for ensuring the provision of high quality evidence-based nursing care in the radiation oncology setting, assessing the physical, educational, psychosocial and spiritual needs of patients referred for radiation as part of their cancer treatment. The Radiation Oncology Nurse provides clinical care and education, and assists in coordinating the patient's care among multiple providers. The Radiation Oncology Nurse utilizes a collaborative process to assess, plan, facilitate, implement and monitor patients throughout their radiation oncology treatment. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Under general supervision: Monitor and assess patients throughout treatment for potential symptoms/side effects of radiation therapy. Provide education to the patient according to the treatment plan and symptoms as patient condition changes. Review patient education materials and nursing documentation forms, update and revise as needed Collection of data about the health history and status of the patient. Assist providers in all aspects of consultation, treatment, procedures and follow up care.  Carry out nursing interventions including but not limited to, wound and skin care Document care provided accurately in the patient record. Participate in the development of the plan of care with other team members and safely implement that care. Collaborate with other disciplines within the Middlesex Health organization to provide coordination and continuity of care for radiation patients.  Active member of weekly chart rounds. Works closely with the patient and family; makes appropriate referrals to meet the individual, cultural and spiritual needs, monitors and evaluates services provided. Works as a liaison to and in collaboration with patients, affiliated physicians, disease management liaisons, and the Middlesex Health System. Assess social, emotional and educational needs and make referrals to appropriate resources.  Participates in Cancer Center and MHS quality improvement activities through problem identification, work group participation and program development. Identifies opportunities to enhance pathway outcomes and processes.
