Overview of the Role at Cardinal Health
The Radiation Safety Consultant will play a vital role in supporting nuclear pharmacies and medical facilities in the safe handling of radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices. This position involves developing and implementing health physics guidelines and training to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and enhance operational safety. Responsibilities include licensing, equipment assessments, emergency response planning, and regulatory audits, all aiming to promote safe practices within the healthcare sector.
Key Responsibilities
Travel regularly to meet clients in various states, conducting site visits that may require overnight stays.
Evaluate and calibrate radiation measurement devices to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Assess radiological equipment for adherence to national and state regulations.
Review imaging procedures and recommend strategies for minimizing patient radiation exposure.
Assist facilities in developing or updating policies related to radioactive materials usage.
Support clients in meeting compliance standards set by the American College of Radiology and Joint Commission.
Provide expert consultation to healthcare organizations regarding regulatory compliance for radioactive materials.
Prepare and submit radioactive materials license applications and amendments as needed.
Facilitate interactions with regulatory bodies concerning radioactive materials and equipment.
Conduct radiation safety audits and reviews to maintain ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles.
Respond promptly to inquiries from customers and regulatory agencies about health physics and safety.
Perform safety evaluations in nuclear medicine and high-dose radiation scenarios.
Carry out dosimetry reviews for workers and patients, including fetus dose assessments.
Lead investigations related to dose assessments while aiding facilities in compliance adherence.
Organize and deliver training sessions, maintaining the necessary documentation and reference materials.
Provide calibration services for customer survey meters and other safety solutions required by their RAM (Radioactive Materials) License.
Identify potential new clients and manage new contracts effectively in collaboration with legal teams.
Perform other related duties as required, collaborating with team members to achieve objectives.
Develop skills to qualify as a Radiation Safety Officer in line with regulatory requirements.
Analyze trends within operations and propose enhancements based on observations.
Ensure accurate billing for services rendered and oversee financial aspects of the region.
Leverage best practices and technical expertise to provide solutions for clients.
Qualifications
8-12 years in a related field is preferred.
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
Comfortable with travel up to 80% of the time, including frequent overnight trips.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong foundational knowledge of health physics concepts and regulations.
Excellent writing skills for professional communications.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required.
