Packaging Engineer – Medical Devices

Location: Leesburg, VA 20175
Assignment Type: Contract/Direct Hire
Schedule: Standard Business Hours
Pay: $46.00/hr

Position Summary

We are seeking a Packaging Engineer to join our packaging team. This role will focus on both sterile and non-sterile packaging configurations for medical devices, working across the full product lifecycle—from concept through validation and continuous improvement. The Packaging Engineer will partner with design teams and suppliers, ensuring that packaging meets performance, compliance, and cost requirements while supporting product delivery to operating rooms.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical support in the development and sustainment of packaging configurations (sterile and non-sterile).
• Design packaging from concept to release, including CAD documentation.
• Create and maintain specifications for primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging.
• Conduct, analyze, and document packaging testing to meet regulatory and performance standards.
• Collaborate with internal engineering teams to define solutions and manage multiple packaging projects.
• Support the development of risk management documents and SOPs related to packaging.
• Contribute to the design and validation of cases and trays for non-sterile medical devices.
• Partner with suppliers to ensure timely, optimal packaging design and integration with our processes.
• Drive cost-reduction initiatives and support packaging strategies for new indications or market expansion.
• Stay current with trends in packaging technology and materials, growing expertise as a thought leader.

Education & Training

• Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Quality Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or Microbiology.

Qualifications & Experience

• 2+ years of hands-on experience in packaging design and development (medical device preferred).
• CAD design experience (SolidWorks or Creo preferred).
• Strong knowledge of QSR and regulated industry design controls.
• Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and effective communicator.
• Familiarity with packaging process development and risk management practices.

Physical & Mental Requirements

• Frequent use of hands/fingers for handling and technical tasks.
• Occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
• Visual requirements include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Work is primarily performed in an office environment.
